- Jaylen Brown now has the richest contract in NBA history
- The 26-year-old and the Boston Celtics have agreed to a 5-year $304m supermax extension
- Brown was drafted by the Celtics in 2016 and has never missed the playoffs
Despite a dismal outing in the 2023 playoffs, the Boston Celtics and Jaylen Brown have agreed to a five-year $304 million supermax extension, the largest contract in NBA history.
The 26-year-old became eligible for a contract extension worth up to 35% of the salary cap by making the All-NBA team last season.
Brown averaged 26.6 points, 6.9 rebounds, and 3.5 assists last season. His deal is fully guaranteed and includes a trade kicker and no player option, according to the Athletic's Shams Charania. He will make $31.8 million next season, the final year of his previous deal.
According to ESPN's Marc J. Spears, Brown and his agent, Jason Glushon, met with the Celtics' hierarchy and ownership on Sunday evening in Boston to finalize the details of the historic deal that keeps Brown under contract until the 2028-29 season.
Brown signs richest NBA deal
Brown's deal dwarfs Nikola Jokic's $276 million extension with the Denver Nuggets. ESPN's Bobby Marks broke down how much Brown will make every year.
Year | Salary |
2024-25 | $52,368,085 |
2025-26 | $56,557,532 |
2026-27 | $60,746,979 |
2027-28 | $64,936,425 |
2028-29 | $69,125,872 |
Total: | $303,734,893 |
Other NBA players who have previously had big deals include Bradley Beal ($251m), Devin Booker ($234.6m), Karl-Anthony Towns ($234.6m), Giannis Antetokounmpo ($228.2m), and Stephen Curry ($215.4m).
Despite his postseason struggles, Brown is still young and will be in his prime when his new deal kicks in. Brown and Jayson Tatum have gone to the Eastern Conference finals in three of the past four years, and with the addition of Kristaps Porzingis, the Celtics now have a top 3 roster in the NBA.
The Celtics drafted Brown with the third overall pick in 2016 and have made the postseason in each of Brown's seven NBA seasons.

Brown roasted after poor display
Sports Brief earlier reported on NBA Twitter roasting Jaylen Brown for his dismal performance in Game 7 of the Eastern Conference finals against the Miami Heat.
With Tatum injured and clearly less than 100% for the rest of the game, the onus was on Jaylen Brown to carry the scoring cudgels for the Celtics in the winner-takes-all contest.
Brown shot the ball horribly from deep, going 1 of 9 from beyond the arc in Game 7. He also committed eight turnovers in the loss to the Heat.
