During the NHL 2012-2013 lockout season, O'Reilly played for the Russian Kontinental Hockey League, Metallurgy Magnitogorsk. Upon his return to NHL, Ryan O'Reilly signed a two-year contract with the Avalanche and received the Lady Byng Memorial Trophy in 2014.

Unfortunately, this was due to an ankle injury sustained during his 12 games with Metallurg.
