- Sports Brief looks at game-winning buzzer-beaters in the last decade
Derrick White etched his name into the NBA history books after his game-winning buzzer-beater saved the Boston Celtics' season on Saturday, May 28, in the Eastern Conference finals against the Miami Heat.
White's buzzer-beater is the second buzzer-beating shot in NBA history where the team facing elimination trailed prior to the shot.
The last-second game-winner capped off a remarkable comeback from the Celtics, who trailed 0-3 in the series, their journey to their second straight NBA finals looking bleak.
In Game 6, White crashed boards after his inbound pass to Marcus Smart with three seconds left. Smart missed the shot, but White was there for the putback, which gave the Celtics a narrow 104-103 win to force a Game 7.
Michael Jordan's "The Shot" in Game 5 of the Eastern Conference First Round against the Cavaliers in 1989 was the first buzzer-beater in the NBA playoff history where the team facing elimination trailed prior to the shot.
However, those two are not the only buzzer-beaters in NBA playoff history. There have been 49 game-winning, buzzer-beating shots in NBA Playoffs history.
LeBron James has five and Jordan has three, while Damian Lillard, Paul Pierce, and Jo Jo White are all tied for third with two, per Sporting News. Sports Brief looks at game-winning buzzer-beaters in the last 10 years.
