The NBA announced on Tuesday that Golden State Warriors star, Stephen Curry has been named this year’s Kareem Abdul-Jabbar Social Justice Champion Award winner.

The accolade, named after the six-time NBA champion and six-time league MVP, is awarded to the player who best embodies Abdul-Jabbar's message of black empowerment, racial equality, and civil rights.

Curry was given the prestigious honor based on his work in advocating for gender and racial equity in sports, as well as voting rights.

The 35-year-old also brought attention to food scarcity in underserved communities.

The four-time NBA champion is the co-chair of former U.S. first lady Michelle Obama's 'When We All Vote' initiative, along with singer-actress, Janelle Monae and fellow athletes, Megan Rapinoe and Chris Paul.

According to the initiative's website, its mission is to increase voter participation in each and every election by helping to close the age and race gap.

Curry has also provided scholarships for high school athletes through his UNDERRATED brand.

The two-time MVP announced a six-year, $6 million commitment in 2019 to fund historically black Howard University golf teams (both men and women).

Curry couple's foundation helps community

He and his wife, Ayesha, also continue to run the Eat. Learn. Play. Foundation, which focuses on the nutrition and physical activity of children in the city of Oakland, where the Warriors played until making their move to San Francisco in 2019.

The couple’s foundation has provided over 500,000 books and 2 million meals to young Oakland students and remodeled four playgrounds in their city, per ESPN.

Curry is gifted $100,000 to the charity of his choice for winning the Kareem Abdul-Jabbar Social Justice Champion Award.

The Warriors star chose the University of San Francisco Institute for Nonviolence and Social Justice to receive that money.

Who are the other finalists?

Curry was named a finalist alongside Phoenix Suns guard Chris Paul, Boston Celtics forward Grant Williams, San Antonio Spurs guard Tre Jones, and Memphis Grizzlies forward Jaren Jackson Jr.

The other four finalists will be each awarded $25,000 toward the social justice-focused organizations of their choice.
