Joe joined the Boston Celtics as an assistant coach in June 2019. Ime Udoka's suspension for the 2022–23 season was announced on September 22, 2022, and he was named the Celtics' interim head coach. Following the Celtics' league-best 18-4 start to the season, he was named Eastern Conference Coach of the Month for October and November on December 1, 2022.

Joe Mazzulla played as the University of West Virginia's backup guard from 2006 to 2011. He withdrew in 2008-09 and later joined as a junior captain for the 2009-10 season and led the Mountaineers to the Final Four. He later became the senior captain in 2010–2011 and averaged 7.7 points, 3.8 rebounds, and 4.2 assists per game.
