  • Will Barton became a free agent after he was bought out by the Washington Wizards
  • He has struggled with his shooting this season but remains a prime target for several teams
  • Playoff contenders interested in veteran free agents will find Barton an appealing option

There have been several NBA stars to hit the buyout market this season.

Former MVP Russell Westbrook, former champion Kevin Love, Patrick Beverley, and Reggie Jackson are among those that have already signed with new teams.

Soon to join that list is Will Barton, after the Washington Wizards officially bought out the veteran wing player on Tuesday.

According to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski, the 32-year-old forward has completed his buyout with Washington before the March 1 deadline to become eligible to join his new team’s playoff roster in case they reach the postseason.

Barton's production dropped in Washington

Denver traded Barton to Washington this past summer in exchange for Kentavious Caldwell-Pope and Ish Smith. He averaged 7.7 points per game in 40 appearances off the bench for the Wizards this season, his first in the nation’s capital. He is shooting just 38.7% from the field.

Barton’s shooting clip may be down, but teams will still be lining up to acquire his services, given Barton’s track record.

He is averaging 11.4 points and 4.2 rebounds per outing in 663 career games (284 starts) with the Portland Trail Blazers (2012-15), Denver Nuggets (2015-22), and the Wizards. The Blazers picked Barton in the second round of the 2012 NBA Draft.

Here are the teams where he could ultimately land.

Boston Celtics

The Celtics are a lock to make the playoffs this year, and one thing they should address ahead of that postseason run is to improve their wing depth, according to NBC Sports.

It would not hurt Boston to have a player such as Barton take some minutes away from Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown so that they will be fresh come playoff time.

New York Knicks

The Knicks are sixth in the East and are perilously close to losing that guaranteed playoff spot with teams breathing down their necks. The Knicks may need to address their bench production to solidify that position.

New York is ranked 25th in the NBA in bench scoring, which Barton can help them with in the future.

Milwaukee Bucks

The Bucks are locked in a tight battle with the Celtics in the race for the top seed in the East. Milwaukee will need all the help it can get to beat Boston, and Barton may be a valuable addition to them for that fight.

Love moves to the Heat

Sports Brief recently reported on Kevin Love joining the Miami Heat.

He made the switch to South Beach after completing a buyout with the Cleveland Cavaliers.

Love will wear the number 42 for the Heat.
