- Four New York Yankees pitchers have now thrown perfect games in the history of MLB
Domingo German etched his name into the record books, throwing a perfect game in the New York Yankees’ 11-0 win over the Oakland Athletics on Wednesday night.
It was the 24th perfect game in the Majors and the first since Félix Hernández hurled one against the Tampa Bay Rays in Seattle on August 15, 2012.
Sports Brief looks at the pitchers who have thrown perfect games for the Yankees in the past.
Don Larsen (1956)
The first perfect game thrown by a Yankee is undoubtedly the most famous perfecto of them all. Don Larsen achieved perfection in Game 5 of the 1956 World Series against the Brooklyn Dodgers, per Yahoo Sports.
It remains the only perfect game in World Series history. His pitching masterclass couldn’t have come at a much better time, as the series was tied at 2-2 heading into that pivotal Game 5.
Larsen made history with his 97th pitch of the contest, striking out Dale Mitchell for the 27th consecutive and final out.
David Wells (1998)
The Yankees had to wait 42 years before they recorded another perfect game. David Wells was the one who delivered the moment, pitching the 15th perfect game in MLB history on May 17, 1998.
That was the tenth no-hitter in New York's history. He retired all 27 batters he faced in the Yankees’ 4-0 win over the Minnesota Twins, which took just two hours and 40 minutes to complete.
David Cone (1999)
The Yankees achieved perfection again the following year, with David Cone delivering a pitching masterclass on July 18, 1999.

That contest was interrupted by a rain delay in the third inning, which lasted 33 minutes. That did not stop Cone from recording the 11th no-hitter in Yankees' history.
Domingo German (2023)
No one expected German to achieve perfection on Wednesday. He came into the game against the Athletics on a poor run of form, allowing 17 runs (15 earned) over 5.1 innings in his last two starts, per MLB.com.
However, he dominated the Oakland batters, needing just 99 pitches to record the fourth perfect game in franchise history.
