Freddie Freeman made history on Sunday, becoming the latest Major League player to join the exclusive 2,000-hit club.
The 33-year-old achieved the career milestone in the Los Angeles Dodgers’ game against the Houston Astros.
The moment he and Dodgers fans have long been waiting for finally arrived in the eighth inning.
He hit an RBI double over the head of Kyle Tucker at right field, sending the fans at Chavez Ravine into a frenzy.
Active players with 2,000 hits
The Dodgers first baseman joined Nelson Cruz, Elvis Andrus, Andrew McCutchen, Miguel Cabrera, and Joey Votto as the only active players in the Majors with at least 2,000 hits, per Yahoo! Sports.
Houston star Jose Altuve is the next closest to accomplishing that feat. He has 1,961 hits.
Freeman is the 98th player in the history of MLB with at least 300 homers and 2,000 hits.
The former Atlanta Brave is one of only four active players, along with Cabrera, Votto, and Cruz, to have achieved that rare feat.
Freeman has 14 home runs, 47 RBI, and 95 hits thus far this season.
Dodgers' rally falls short
Freeman’s double in the bottom of the eighth inning sparked a late rally for the Dodgers, who later tied the game behind a two-run blast by catcher Will Smith, per ESPN.
Their comeback bid was thwarted, though, after Alex Bregman delivered the game-winning hit for the Astros in the 11th inning.
The Dodgers dropped to 43-34 with the loss. They are three games behind the Arizona Diamondbacks for first place in the NL West standings.
