We’re only a few hours away from the start of the 2023 U.S. Open, and anticipation is building to a fever pitch for the year’s third major.
It will be a memorable tournament, with Brooks Koepka, Rory McIlroy, and Jon Rahm headlining this year’s field.
Considering that the U.S. Open is one of the most prestigious events on the golfing calendar, it stands to reason that this major tournament is bound to reward its participants more handsomely than the other stops on the Tour.
Exactly how much cash is at stake in Los Angeles, California, this week? Let’s check out the prize money breakdown awaiting some of the top golfers in the world.
The total payout
There is money to be made at the Los Angeles Country Club. The 2023 U.S. Open boasts a total purse of $20 million, the highest among the four major championships.
For comparison, this year’s Masters had an $18 million purse, while the 2023 PGA Championship gave out $17.5 million in winnings, per ESPN.
A hefty $3.6 million of the $20 million pot will go to the eventual U.S. Open champion. That is excellent news for this week’s field, considering the total payout in last year’s U.S. Open amounted to $17.5 million.
To put into perspective the difference in prize money, defending champion Matt Fitzpatrick pocketed $3.15 million in cash winnings last year.
That is $450,000 less than the amount the U.S. Open champion will receive this year.
Finishing second in this year’s U.S. Open isn't bad either, with the runner-up receiving a cash payout of $2.18 million, per Bleacher Report.
