  • Brooks Koepka won the 2023 PGA Championship last month
  • Scottie Scheffler finished second in last year’s U.S. Open
  • Jon Rahm won the 2023 Masters to capture his second major

The world’s top golfers will head to Los Angeles, California, this week for the 2023 staging of the U.S. Open.

A cool $20 million is at stake for the 156-man field, with the champion grabbing the $3.6 million top prize and the coveted U.S. Open Championship Trophy.

Sports Brief looks at who could capture the year's third major championship.

Here are the three biggest contenders to win the 2023 U.S. Open:

1. Brooks Koepka

It’s Brooks Koepka’s world, and we are all just living in it. The American cemented his status as one of the greatest golfers of his generation with a stunning victory at the PGA Championship last month.

He shot a three-under-par 67 in the final round at Oak Hill Country Club in Rochester, New York, to record a two-stroke win over Viktor Hovland.

It was a historic win for Koepka, who won his third PGA Championship. He also became the 20th male golfer to win five major championships, per Bleacher Report.

Koepka also came close to winning the Masters last April, holding the 54-hole lead before collapsing in the final round.

Given his experience and solid play in the majors this season, it isn’t far-fetched to see Koepka winning his third U.S. Open title this week.

2. Scottie Scheffler

Scheffler would want nothing more than to win this week. He loves playing in the U.S. Open, recording two top-10s in three career starts.

The top seed came close to winning last year’s U.S. Open, losing by one stroke to champion, Matt Fitzpatrick.

An argument can be made that Scheffler has played better than Koepka in the past months, with the American placing 12th or better in 16 consecutive PGA events. He recorded two wins and 13 top-10s during that span, per Fox Sports.

3. Jon Rahm

Rahm is one of the hottest golfers on the planet, recording top-two finishes in two of his last five starts, including a victory at this year’s Masters.

He has fared exceptionally well in the U.S. Open in his career, posting top-12 finishes in three of his last four starts.

Rahm won the U.S. Open in 2021 and finished third in 2019.

Block drains hole-in-one

Sports Brief also reported on Michael Block making an ace during the final round of the 2023 PGA Championship.

He made the incredible shot on the 15th, with his shot landing right at the pin for a stunning slam dunk hole-in-one.
