  • Harry Kane's perfectly dispatched penalty was all Spurs needed to secure a hard-fought 1-0 win over the Clarets
  • The win boosts Tottenham's chances of securing Champions League football and will hope Arsenal drop points against Newcastle United on Monday

Tottenham kept their top-four hopes alive with a narrow win over relegation-threatened Burnley at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

Harry Kane's VAR-inspired penalty was more than enough for the Lilywhites to move into the top four places at least temporarily, having played one game more than closest rivals Arsenal.

Fresh from thumping north London rivals Arsenal, the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium was fully charged as the home crowd sought to inspire the team for their Champions League chase.

And it appears the Spurs players led by Harry Kane rallied to the deafening noise from the home crowd however their persistent attacks yielded no dividends.

English forward Ashley Barnes had handled the ball while blocking a touch from Davinson Sánchez. After a VAR review, a penalty was given and Kane stepped up to convert in the eighth minute of first-half stoppage time.

After recess, Spurs continued to probe for the double however an inspired Nick Pope in post for Burnley thwarted the home side including a gilt-edge opportunity which was spurned by Son Heung-min.

With no further adjustments to the scoreline, Tottenham managed to hold on to their slim 1-0 win to leapfrog Arsenal into the top-four spot while sinking Burnley into 18th position.

Spurs thrash 10-man Arsenal in epic north London derby

Earlier, Sports Brief reported that Tottenham Hotspur thrashed a 10-man Arsenal 3-0 on Thursday night to keep their Champions League hopes alive.

Harry Kane scored twice as Heung-min Son continued his hot streak of form to cut move to one point behind fourth place.

Arsenal started on the front foot with Hugo Lloris having a few nervy moments. But Spurs quickly settled in, with Son becoming a constant menace to the left-hand side of Arsenal's defence marshalled by Cedric Soares and Rob Holding.
