FootballSuperSport United Sneaks Into Top 8 at the Expense of Lacklustre Orlando Pirates in DStv Premiership
- SuperSport United swatted Orlando Pirates 2-0 in the final fixture of the 2021-22 DStv Premiership season at the Lucas Moripe Stadium in Atteridgeville
- An own goal by Fortune Makaringe and a penalty from Gampani Lungu were enough for Matsatsantsa to ease past the Buccaneers
- The victory ensured that United snuck into the Top 8 spots, while Pirates already flagging hopes of playing in Africa next season were mercifully extinguished
SuperSport United will be playing in next season's MTN 8 competition.
This is after Matsatsantsa easily overcame a feeble Orlando Pirates 2-0 at the Lucas Moripe Stadium in Atteridgeville on Monday night. Fortune Makaringe's unfortunate own goal and Gampani Lungu's penalty - from a Happy Jele foul that saw him receive a red card - were enough for the victory.
The Buccaneers will finish the season in sixth place, missing the opportunity to play in the CAF Champions League and Confederations Cup in the feeblest manner possible. The result also ensured that Royal AM, confirmed as third-placed finishers, will be South Africa's entrant into the continent's secondary club competition.
United needed the victory to finish ahead of Golden Arrows - who were sitting precariously in eighth spot - doing so by virtue of a superior goal difference.
With season over, all eyes will turn to Pirates co-coaches Mandla Ncikazi and Fadlu Davids. For all intents and purposes, they failed in their mandate after taking over from Josef Zinnbauer last August. The team did not win a single trophy, nor did it claim a podium finish, rewarded by a place in Africa, something the club cherishes.
It remains to be seen whether they will hang onto their jobs as a result.

The fixture will round off Pirates' three outstanding fixtures due to their CAF Confederations Cup commitments.
