FootballSuperSport United Are on the Hunt for a New Coach, 3 Former Premier Soccer League Managers Linked With the Job
- SuperSport United confirmed that Andre Arendse would serve as interim coach until a replacement is found
- Andre Arendse takes over the running of the club after Kaitano Tembo was let go due to disappointing results
- Three former Premier Soccer League managers have all been linked with the coaching role at SuperSport United
SuperSport United require a new coach after parting ways with Kaitano Tembo, and three former DStv Premiership managers have since been linked with the club.
As reported by KickOff, the club made initial contact with Benni McCarthy but have not formally approached him for the post. However, Matsatsantsa are believed to have been admirers of the former AmaZulu coach since before he coached Usuthu.
Gavin Hunt, a former manager at SuperSport United, and Muhsin Ertugral have also been linked with the vacant role.
Benni McCarthy:
The former Orlando Pirates and Porto star has experienced mixed fortunes during his coaching career. He achieved success with Cape Town City, winning the MTN 8 title and took AmaZulu to their first CAF Champions League campaign. But, unfortunately, he’s developed a ‘one season wonder’ tag as he was let go by both clubs after a disappointing second season.
Gavin Hunt:
Gavin Hunt is no stranger to SuperSport United and achieved great success with the club. Hunt has won the DStv Premiership four times; three were in a row with SuperSport United. He’s also won all the domestic trophies that the country has to offer.
Muhsin Ertugral:
Muhsin Ertugral is another coach who needs no introduction. Ertugral has coached many South African sides, including Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates. During his time with the Amakhosi, he tasted cup glory, proving that he can achieve success with the right team.
While SuperSport have not yet approached any potential manager, the club confirmed that Andre Arendse would serve as an interim coach until a suitable replacement is found, The South African reported. However, CEO Stan Matthews confirmed that Arendse could secure the role permanently.
“We’ve now given Andre Arendse a run until the end of the season and he’s chosen to work with Thabo September. We are happy with that. We’ll see how it goes and whether he likes it or not. If not, then we will have to look outside,” he said.

FootballSuperSport United part ways with coach Kaitano Tembo, Andre Arendse to oversee the squad until the end of the season
Kaitano Tembo has become the latest Premier Soccer League coach to lose his job this season. SuperSport United and Tembo have parted ways by mutual agreement after a string of disappointing results.
As Sports Brief earlier noted, Matsatsantsa a Pitori have won just two of their last 10 DStv Premiership fixtures. They were also knocked out of the Nedbank Cup by TTM this past weekend, iDiskiTimes reported.
Tembo has been at the club for the past 23 years, first as a player and then as an assistant coach. He took over as manager in July 2018. During his time in charge, he oversaw 135 games, winning 55 games, losing 42 and earning 38 draws.
