Rasheedat Ajibade Scores As Nigeria Beat Cameroon to Reach AWCON Semis, Pick Up World Cup Ticket

The Super Falcons of Nigeria are through to the semifinal of the 2022 Africa Women Cup of Nations in Morocco.

Rasheedat Ajibade's header in the 55th minute was enough for the Nigerians to defeat their opponents 1-0 to also keep their la decima hopes alive.

Victory in the encounter also means the Super Falcons pick up one of the four automatic tickets to the 2023 FIFA Women's World Cup in Australia and New Zealand.

However, the ladies had to battle for the entire 90minutes as the encounter was explosive from the very first blast of the whistle.

As early as the 3rd minute, Nigeria won a free kick after a foul on Ucheibe in the danger area, but the effort was wasted.

The Indomitable Lionesses launched their first attack in the 11th minute but Francisca Ordega tracked back to help Ashleigh Plumptre when she hacked an opposition down.

In the 20th minute, Nigeria came close again with Okobi winning a freekick, but the effort on goal was blocked.

Some physicality in the Nigerian area in the 30th minute saw Ohale win a free kick as it was not an easy ride for the Cameroonians.

And four minutes before halftime, Ajibade went for the ambitious, but she failed to hit the target. It was 0-0 at halftime.

With just ten minutes into the second half, Nigeria took the lead courtesy a sensational header by Rasheedat Ajibade.

Okobi's did well to unsettle the Cameroonian defence before Onumonu's inch-perfect cross found Ajibade's waiting head. 1-0 Nigeria.

Desperate for an equaliser, Cameroon launched an attacking onslaught and made attempts to restore parity.

In the closing minutes, Cameroon won a free kick in a good area as it became a cagey affair but somehow the Nigerians managed to hold on to their lead.

It ended; Nigeria 1-0 Cameroon.

Up next for the Super Falcons is a semi-final clash against tournament hosts Morocco on July 18 in Rabat.

South Africa to clash with Tunisia

Sports Brief earlier reported that there is much to play for in the much-anticipated 2022 Women's Africa Cup of Nations quarterfinal between South Africa and Tunisia tonight in Morocco.

The match will take place at the Stade Moulay Hassan in Rabat, kicking off at 10pm (CAT).

The winner will not only reach the semifinals, but will also automatically book their place at the 2023 FIFA Women's World Cup to be co-hosted by Australia and New Zealand.
