A former manager at Dutch club Ajax, Adriaan De Mos has expressed disappointment in the quality of Nigerian defender Calvin Bassey.

Bassey left Scottish club Glasgow Rangers during the summer and moved to Amsterdam, where he has struggled to settle in.

The Nigerian international was crucial to Ranger's campaign in the Europa League last season, and he attracted interest from a number of clubs.

However, Adriaan De Mos has questioned the rationale behind Ajax’s decision to sign the Nigerian international, saying he has nothing to offer.

A number of clubs in England were linked with the Super Eagles star, including West Ham United, Chelsea and Arsenal, but he opted to move to Ajax for a staggering €23million.

De Mos insisted the 23-year-old is not at the level of Ajax, adding that he can't imagine why the club signed him in the first place.

De Mos said, as per Football Transfer via Soccernet:

“Bassey is not an Ajax player for me. I can’t imagine anyway why you would bring a player from the Scottish league to Ajax."
“He has no speed of action, no insight. And before he has turned, a day has passed. There is no feeling in him.”

Calvin Bassey receives debut red

Meanwhile, Bassey had only played 17 minutes in his debut game for the Dutch club before he was shown a straight red, Sports Brief reported.

Ajax were reduced to ten men in the second half, as the Dutch champions lost to PSV in the season's curtain opener.

In the 78th minute, Bassey was adjudged to have made a clumsy tackle on Moroccan midfielder Ismael Saibari, after VAR was used to review his challenge.

The former Rangers left-back was initially shown a yellow card but after a review, it was upgraded to a red card.

How Calvin Bassey almost quit football

Sports Brief earlier reported on 22-year-old Calvin Bassey recalling how much difficulty he had in his younger years.

He described almost quitting the game of football, before getting a call from Leicester City which changed his life forever.

“I had already resigned myself to the fact that that opportunity would never come again," he said in a report on Soccernet.
