Retired Super Eagles Midfielder Mikel Obi Opens Up on Future Plans, Speaks on His Remarkable Career

The former captain of Nigeria’s Super Eagles, Mikel Obi, who recently retired from professional football, says he is not done with sports.

Obi announced his retirement in September, stating he is very satisfied with what he achieved during the course of his remarkable career.

He noted that 'good things must come to an end', but added that he still wants to be involved in sports in some capacity.

Having won the AFCON tournament with Nigeria in 2013, Mikel also captained the Super Eagles at the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia.

In a recent interview, the 35-year-old admitted that it was a tough decision to quit professional football. However, he added that he is not done with sports.

He said via Channels TV:

"My career has been a massive blessing for me and for my family. I've been very lucky and so fortunate to have the kind of career I had in terms of winning and playing, and doing the things I have to do. Also juggling it with family and with kids. Looking back at it, there's no single regret in my career."
"Who knows what the future will bring? I wouldn't like to say I'm done with sports. It's been my life for the past 20 years. I love being into football and sports as well. I enjoy spending time on the pitch and in the locker room.”

Mikel explains why Mourinho changed his position

Sports Brief earlier reported that Mikel Obi recently opened up on how Portuguese manager Jose Mourinho changed his position to the defensive midfield.

The attacking midfielder joined the Premier League club Chelsea in 2006 under manager Mourinho, but he was later converted to the defensive midfield role.

The former Lyn of Oslo star was impactful upfront for the Norwegian outfit, but he admitted that Chelsea had quite a lot of talented superstars in his initial role.
