  • Victor Osimhen who saw his goal ruled out by VAR has expressed disappointment at Nigeria’s failure to qualify for the World Cup
  • The Nigerian international says the Super Eagles gave their very best during the encounter, but it was not enough to see them through
  • Victory in the second leg would have seen Nigeria pick up one of the five tickets allotted to Africa, but Ghana held the hosts to a 1-1 draw to proceed

Super Eagles forward Victor Osimhen has lamented Nigeria’s failure to qualify for the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar.

Nigeria failed to defeat Ghana at the Moshood Abiola Stadium as the Black Stars forced the Super Eagles to a 1-1 draw to go through to the World Cup.

Napoli forward Victor Osimhen who was in the thick of the action during the encounter on Tuesday night was left disappointed over his side’s failure to pick the ticket.

A win for Nigeria during the encounter would have seen the Eagles through to the Mundial, but they missed out as the Black stars qualify for the global football showpiece on the away goals rule.

Osimhen thought he had given Nigeria the win, but his goal shortly before half-time was ruled out by the Video Assistant Referee.

He told Punch Sports Extra:

“It was very disappointing; I don’t even know what to say. We all did our best but it was not enough on the day. It is sad because the next World Cup is years away and we have to sit this one out.
“I was impressed with the fans that came out; I have never seen that kind of support in Nigeria.”

The disappointing result also led to fans invading the stadium and vandalising some sections of the field as well as destroying the glass in the technical area.

Nigeria’s Sports Minister condemns vandalisation of Abuja Stadium

Meanwhile, Nigeria’s Sports Minister Sunday Dare has condemned the vandalisation of the Abuja Stadium following the Super Eagles’ failure to qualify for the 2022 World Cup.

Sunday Dare stated that in sports, nothing is 100 per cent certain and that the Federal Government gave every support for the Super Eagles to qualify.

As soon as the referee sounded the final whistle, irate fans stormed the pitch in an attempt to destroy everything in sight, which has been condemned by the Sports Minister.

Ghana’s flag hoisted in Qatar

Sports Brief earlier reported that Ghana's flag has finally been hoisted in Qatar ahead of the upcoming FIFA World Cup in the Asian country later this year.

In a short ceremony in Doha, Dr Emmanuel Enos, Ghana's Ambassador to Qatar raised the flag of Ghana aloft, indicating the West African country's qualification.

The flag-raising activity ceremony is done for countries that have qualified for the tournament slated for November 2022.
