Super Eagles Coach Reckons Nigeria Deserve World Cup Spot More Than Ghana

• Ghana will first host their perennial rivals on March 25 before heading to Nigeria for the reverse fixture four days later

Caretaker manager for the Super Eagles, Augustine Eguavoen reckons his nation deserves a spot in Qatar.

Eguavoen will lead the Super Eagles to the final phase of the World Cup qualifiers in a make-or-break tie against West African neighbours Ghana.

Augustine, who doubles as the Technical Director of the Nigeria Football Federation, was retained as the interim manager after a stellar group phase in the Africa Cup of Nations.

The 56-year-old tactician in an interview with an online Ghanaian portal Ghanasportspage admitted the clash between the two football powerhouses will be tough.

“It’s going to be a very tough game and a tight one as well,” Eguavoen said.

“We have a lot of mutual respect for one another, and when Ghana plays Nigeria and Nigeria plays Ghana, it’s always tough, it’s always tight. But you see, it’s going to boil down to us trying to go there (Ghana). We will play everything we can to try to win the game, in fact, both games, but with no disrespect because Ghana is a very strong side, individually and collectively. We will just go and fight and try to win the game.” He ended

Despite admitting the mountainous task at hand, the former Super Eagles defender insists his nation deserves a place at the World Cup.

“There is no doubt in my mind. I am a Nigerian, a full-blooded Nigerian, and if you asked me such a question, I think, without missing words, we deserve a place at the World Cup.”

Nigerian legend Jay Jay Okocha warns Super Eagles ahead of cliffhanger against Ghana

Earlier, Sports Brief reported that former Nigerian international Austin Jay Jay Okocha has stated that any match involving the Super Eagles and the Black Stars of Ghana is always a tough one, GOAL reports.

Both teams battle next month for a World Cup ticket and Okocha who faced Ghana on a number of occasions during his playing days said that all that matters is for the team to get the ticket.

The first leg will hold at the Cape Coast Stadium on March 25 before both teams slug it out in the reverse fixture at the Moshood Abiola Stadium in Abuja four days later.
