  • Kelechi Iheanacho first-half goal settled the Group D opener between the Super Eagles of Nigeria and the Pharaohs of Egypt
  • Nigeria put on a dominant display to hand Egypt their first loss in an AFCON opening game since 2004
  • The Super Eagles will take on the unpredictable Sudan next, while Egypt will have to rethink its strategy and execution against Guinea-Bissau

South Africans were impressed with the controlled and rather comfortable win for Nigeria over an imposing Egypt team.

Leicester City striker Kelechi Iheanacho's beautiful strike in the 30th minute was the difference between the sides in the group D opener. There can be no question about how well in control the Super Eagles were, encapsulated by how well they neutralised the otherwise usually deadly Liverpool assassin Mohamed Salah.

This was not lost on South African viewers, who had nothing but praise for the Nigerians.

"Aside being outplayed by Nigeria Super Eagles, I also think Egypt's problem is over-reliance on @MoSalah, thus if Mo Salah doesn't show up at the party it means doom to Egypt. Going forward Egypt should decentralise their success on the pitch."

"Nigeria brought so much substance in their game to stun Egypt! #AFCON2021"

"#NGAEGY #AFCON2021 The game between Nigeria and Egypt was definitely the first nice game since the begging of AFCON. At least we watched soccer this time around."

"Good evening guys. Oh yes! EGYPT @Orange_Egypt were taught how to play soccer by the Super Eagles @NGSuperEagles. Good start by Nigeria. Friendly advice for the rest of the teams should be to prepare well against Nigeria or else... problems. #AFCON2021"

Resilient Sierra Leone hold champions Algeria in tough Group E clash

Sierra Leone have handed reigning Africa Cup of Nations champions, Algeria, a reality check after forcing them to a frustrating 0-0 draw in their Group E curtain-raiser.

As reported on Sports Brief, despite their relatively superior squad, the Desert Foxes were unable to penetrate through Sierra Leone's stubborn defence.

Algeria's strong squad featured Man City superstar Riyad Mahrez, Lyon's Islam Slimani, and Yacine Brahimi.
