- Nigeria are three-time champions of the AFCON winning the competition in 1980, 1994 and 2003
The Super Eagles will take home total prize money of N2.9billion if they emerge as champions of the 33rd edition of the Africa Cup of Nations.
The competition’s prize money was increased from 4.5 million dollars to 5 million dollars, representing an increase of about 11 percent The Nation reports.
The runners-up will also get 2.75 million dollars in prize money, up from 2.5 million dollars and an increase of 10 percent and Semi-Finalists will get 2.2 million dollars which is an increase of 200,000 dollars.
The Confederation of African Football (CAF) Executive Committee made this decision on Friday January 7 after a meeting of its members before the start of Africa’s flagship football competition Sporting Life reports.
Host Cameroon are set to host the rest of Africa when the competition kicks-off this Sunday January 9 in Yaounde as the Indomitable Lions lock horns with Burkina Faso in the opening game.
The Super Eagles will be bidding to win its fourth continental crown after successes in 1980, 1994 and 2003 and have been grouped with record seven times winners Egypt, Sudan and Guinea-Bissau in group D.
Nigeria arrived Cameroonian city of Garoua on Wednesday January 5 and will play its first game against Egypt on Tuesday January 11.

Earlier Sportsbrief reported Super Eagles of Nigeria on Friday evening, January 7, defeated Cameroonian giants Coton Sport 2-0 in a friendly match played in Garoua ahead of first AFCON game against Egypt.
Austin Eguavoen demanded that a friendly match be played for his wards so as for him to see their level of readiness before facing the seven-time African champions.
Super Eagles of Nigeria scored their first goal in the 30th minute through captain Ahmed Musa who benefited from an assist by Chidera Ejuke.
