  • Real Madrid boss Carlo Ancelotti has admitted he wanted to change the penalty taker this season but opted to stick with club captain Karim Benzema because of last season
  • Benzema's inability to convert from 12 yards ended Real Madrid's 100 per cent start to the season
  • Benzema became the first player in La Liga history to have missed three penalties against the same goalkeeper, Osasuna’s Sergio Herrera

Real Madrid manager Carlo Ancelotti has delivered an honest verdict about Karim Benzema's missed penalty against Osasuna on Sunday, October 2.

Benzema made a return to the Madrid starting lineup after a month-long injury lay-off. His return was supposed to have enhanced the club's chances of keeping their winning run intact.

However, the Frenchman ended up being the villain as he missed from the penalty spot for the second time this campaign as Los Blancos shared the spoils with Osasuna.

Despite Madrid's relentless pursuit to reclaim their lead, it proved fruitless as Osasuna held their own to nick a draw at the Santiago Bernabeu Stadium.

Following the end of the game, head coach Ancelotti spoke to the media and addressed Benzema's missed penalty:

"I thought about changing the shooter, but Karim took the two biggest penalties last season. He's the best shooter we have. It hasn't been his best game after this stretch of injury," Ancelotti said as quoted by All Football.

Benzema's inability to score from the spot against Osasuna was his fifth penalty miss of Real Madrid's last seven in the La Liga, chalking an unwanted record in the Spanish elite division, as reported by Football Espana.

Earlier, Sports Brief reported that Karim Benzema is a prolific striker, there’s no denying that.

The French striker however, has struggled to find the back of the net from the penalty box of late.

As reported by Football Espana, Benz has set a new record in La Liga, but it’s not something he will be particularly proud of.
