Karim Benzema has admitted that it is almost impossible to break Cristiano Ronaldo's goalscoring record at Real Madrid

Benzema, 34, was adjudged the 2022 UEFA Player of the Year following his splendid performance for the Los Blancos last season.

The Frenchman notched a total of 44 goals in all competitions for Carlo Ancelotti's side in the 2021/22 campaign and emerged as the top scorer in both the UEFA Champions League and the Spanish La Liga.

Benzema has now moved to second on the highest scoring list for Real Madrid with 325 goals, overtaking Raul Gonzalez on 323.

Only Ronaldo has scored more goals for the Whites than Benzema. The Manchester United forward netted a remarkable 450 goals during his nine-year spell at Santiago Bernabeu between 2009 and 2018.

Despite being on the best of forms in his illustrious career, Benzema believes it will be an arduous task to become the highest goalscorer for Real Madrid.

"Cristiano helped me a lot," Benzema told European Sports Media, quoted by Marca.

"With him I had another role and when he left, I knew I could take a step forward in scoring goals, but still playing football.

"What has changed since then is my goal tally, but I'm still playing the way I think you have to play this game. The figures mean I'm not far behind the Real Madrid legends, and that gives me confidence, even though I know that reaching Cristiano's goal [figures] is impossible.
