Lionel Messi marked his return to club football in style, scoring in his first post-World Cup match for Paris Saint-Germain.

The 35-year-old world champion found the back of the net as PSG returned to winning ways, posting a 2-0 victory over Angers on Wednesday evening.

Messi was afforded an extended break after playing a starring role in Argentina's World Cup triumph in December, returning to training in the first week of the New Year.

Messi on target as PSG win

Lionel Messi made his first appearance for Paris Saint-Germain since winning the World Cup with Argentina and scored in a 2-0 victory against Angers in Ligue 1 on Wednesday.

The win, which came three and a half weeks after he captained Argentina to their World Cup final triumph on penalties against France in Qatar, saw PSG move six points clear at the top of the French table.

Messi had been rested for PSG's first three matches following the long break in the season caused by the World Cup, but he returned to training in Paris a week ago and was back in the starting line-up for this match against Ligue 1's bottom side.

Messi wins prestigious French award

Sports Brief earlier reported that Paris Saint-Germain attacker, Lionel Messi has won another distinguished accolade for the first time in his illustrious career, following his World Cup victory with Argentina.

Messi steered La Albiceste to defeat France in the World Cup final via penalties, scoring two goals in regular time while fellow teammate Kylian Mbappe netted a hat-trick for the losing team.

French media outlet L'Equipe has honoured the Argentine genius with another award following his heroics in Qatar.
