FootballCAF Confirms Penalties Should Confed Cup Final Between Pirates and Berkane Ends in Draw After 90 Minutes
- The CAF Confederations Cup final between Orlando Pirates and RS Berkane in Nigeria will be settled immediately after 90 minutes via penalties if it ends in a draw
- This is in contrast to the usual added drama of extra time, which follows regulation time in all of the organisation's other tournaments
- The Buccaneers have already experienced the unbearable tension of a shootout, eliminating SC Simba in the quarterfinals that way
Orlando Pirates and RS Berkane players' fitness won't be stretched to the limit in the CAF Confederations Cup final tomorrow night.
Should the match end in a draw after regulation time, the encounter is heading straight to a penalty shootout to settle matters once and for all.
The Buccaneers have already been stress-tested on that front, having defeated Tanzanian team SC Simba on penalties in the quarterfinal tie, as was reported by Sports News Africa. CAF confirmed this change of protocol earlier today according to The South African.
Meanwhile, CAF also revealed the official match ball for Friday's encounter at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium in Uyo, Nigeria. As stated on the organisation's website, it is based on Umbro’s renowned Neo Pro ball model.
The official match ball is “FIFA Quality Pro” certified for use at the highest levels of the professional game and utilises the latest in structural and fabrication technology with a unique graphic that draws on the structural elements of the tournament’s trophy.
Nicole Marcus, production manager at Umbro South Africa, said:
“The Confederation Cup is a showpiece of domestic football and to reach the final of such a prestigious continental tournament is a momentous achievement that should be celebrated. This ball is a celebration of Africa’s football excellence and a tribute to all those who have contributed to it.”
