Gary Neville defends Weghorst after poor outing for Man United against Newcastle
FootballNewcastle vs Man United: Fans Single Out One Red Devils Player Who Should Be Benched After Defeat
- Manchester United's Wout Weghorst had a horror show against Newcastle United
- The Red Devils succumbed to a 2-0 defeat which dropped them to fourth on the log
- The embattled Dutch striker had minimal touches on the ball against the Magpies
Dutch striker, Wout Weghorst seems to have lost the favour of Manchester United fans after a forgettable performance against Newcastle United on April 2.
Interestingly, United fans’ brutal verdict on Weghorst came just hours after coach, Erik ten Hag hinted the striker would be at Old Trafford beyond his loan deal.
The Dutchman joined the Red Devils on a six-month loan deal from Burnley in January and has been a regular in recent weeks.
In total, he has made 19 appearances and despite his lack of goals, his presence up front has been largely appreciated by United fans.

Weghorst struggles against Newcastle
Against the Magpies, Weghorst struggled to make an impact and had a total of just 10 touches on the ball before being subbed off for Anthony Martial.
It did not help that ten Hag did not play to the striker’s strength, which is primarily his height, with the manager preferring to play him out from the back.
On social media, fans did not hold back in calling out the Dutchman, saying it was high time he was dropped to the bench in favour of the returning Martial.

“Struggling and 'finished' Cristiano Ronaldo had more goal contributions for Man United this season than Wout Weghorst his replacement have in 18 consecutive appearances.”

"Weghorst MUST NOT start anymore games for Manutd , he isn’t good enough for any premier league club let alone Manutd , it’s a disgrace he’s even wearing the shirt. If I wanted someone to press from the front I would have rather got an athlete then him."

"I really respect Wout Weghorst for coming and giving it a go, he’s probably a really good bloke as well but he’s just nowhere near this level unfortunately."

"Weghorst could play another 10 hours of football and still not score."
