  • Erik ten Hag has enjoyed a bright start to life at Old Trafford since he took charge of Manchester United
  • The tactician recently ended United's six-year trophy drought after he helped the side beat Newcastle in the Carabao Cup final
  • However, he and Man United were handed a reality check on Sunday after they were demolished 7-0 by Liverpool at Anfield

Erik ten Hag's comments about rivals Man City and Liverpool when he took charge of Man United have not aged well.

The Dutchman was appointed United boss last April, succeeding Ralf Rangnick whose temporary contract had come to an end after an interim role.

The 52-year-old has no doubt had one if the brightest starts to life at Old Trafford of any United in recent years post-Sir Alex Ferguson era.

Recently, Ten Hag led the Red Devils to a Carabao Cup triumph over Newcastle United at Wembley Stadium, in what was the Manchester club's first trophy in six years.

In the Premier League, the former Ajax boss has done an equally incredible job, with the side rated outside favourites to challenge for the title.

The Red Devils' spectacular run across competitions had many believing the club are on their way back to their glory days.

However, their 7-0 demolition by Liverpool on Sunday evening has somewhat handed United a reality check.

Ten Hag's comments on Liverpool, Man City

The defeat came months after Ten Hag hinted on his intention to help Man United end the dominance of Liverpool and Man City.

The United boss made the declaration last summer after he took charge of the Old Trafford dwellers.

"I admire them both, Liverpool and Manchester City...But you will always see an era come to an end," ESPN quoted the Dutchman saying.

Ironically, United have gone on to suffer heavy defeats in the hands of both teams, with City previously mauling the Red Devils 6-3.

Ten Hag slams Man United stars

Earlier, Sports Brief reported Erik Ten Hag was at pains to try to explain exactly what went wrong for his Manchester United side, who spectacularly lost 7-0 to Liverpool on Sunday, March 5.

Speaking after the game, a seemingly calm Ten Hag claimed his side “lost their heads”. Asked whether he was angry about the defeat, he said;

“Yes definitely. I was surprised because I have seen the last weeks and months our winning attitude. The second half we had no attitude at all.”
“We didn’t stick to plan, and we lost our heads. Very unprofessional that is not Manchester United”.
