Manchester United football director John Murtough has revealed the search for the club's next permanent manager is in top gear.
United are in the market for an experienced manager who will take over at the end of the season when interim boss Ralf Rangnick steps down to assume a consultancy role with the club.
Rangnick has been managing the Red Devils since December 2021 when he was brought in to fill the void left by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer who was shown the door after a string of poor results.
John Murtough rates Rangnick's spell
Whereas United have not improved as much under Rangnick, Murtough believes the German has been a breath of fresh air.
However, the United chief was quick to underscore the need for the club to arrest their inconsistencies as they chase a top four finish.
He further added the Red Devils should be challenging for trophies rather than a Champions League spot
"We know that consistency is key as we strive for a top-four finish this season,’' Murtough said as quoted by Metro UK.
The hunt for Man United's next manager
Speaking on United's search for their next manager, Murtough revealed the club is conducting a "thorough process" to find the perfect fit for the job.
"We are now conducting a thorough process for the appointment of a new permanent manager who will take charge this summer, with the objective to get us back to challenging for those domestic and European titles," he said.
As things stand, Paris Saint-Germain boss Mauricio Pochettino and his Ajax counterpart Erik Ten Hag are believed to be the leading candidates for the role.
