Former Premier League striker Dean Ashton has absolved Cristiano Ronaldo from blame following his recent struggles in front of goal.

Ronaldo is currently on the longest goal drought in his football career since the 2008/09 season in his first stint with United.

Despite hitting the ground running on his return to Old Trafford, the Portuguese talisman has endured a somewhat torrid run that has seen him fail to score in six matches.

The forward's last goal for the Red Devils was back in December, with the five-time Ballon d'Or finding the back of the net just twice since the appointment of Ralf Rangnick as interim boss.

So who is to blame for Ronaldo's poor run?

According to Ashton, three United players are responsible for Ronaldo's dip in form.

The former West Ham and Norwich striker claimed the trio of Marcus Rashford, Luke Shaw, and Diogo Dalot are to blame for Ronaldo's goal drought.

Speaking on talkSPORT, Ashton defended the veteran striker as he called out the three for what he believes is a lack of service.

“It’s not his fault for a start. He’s getting angry because the service is that bad," Ashton noted.

“Manchester United are playing every other way except what’s needed for him and to get the best out of him.

“Why have the best goalscorer in the history of football and not give him the service he needs?" He posed.
