Sundowns and Al Ahly were drawn in the same group in the TotalEnergies Confederation of African Football (CAF) Champions League. Sundowns and defending champions Al Ahly will be joined in Group A by Sudanese teams, Al Hilal and Al Merrikh, Sport24 reported.

Al Ahly will be looking to win their 11th CAF Champion's League trophy and the third in a row with Mosimane at the helm. Sundowns will be looking to lift their second trophy, having already won the tournament once when Pitso was still coach.

Sundowns and Al Ahly will face off next year

The first meeting between the two clubs will take in Egypt on the weekend of 25 and 26 February, 2022, The South African confirmed. The second leg will be played in South Africa on 11 and 12 March, 2022.

Fans are hyped for a mouthwatering clash between Sundowns and Al Ahly

Following the draw, fans couldn't help taking to Twitter to express their excitement for the games.

@Sakhumuzi__

"On this Al Ahly vs Mamelodi Sundowns fixture.. I'm just imagining " the Promising young player" Mvala battling with Afsha"

@Yobobito

"Same group as @Masandawana. Can't wait for the quality of this game between Al Ahly and Mamelodi Sundowns. Pitso and Co. vs Manqoba and Co."

Sundowns fans will also be hoping that their team bounces back to winning ways ahead of the clash following a poor end to the Premier Soccer League (PSL) year.

The curse of Benni McCarthy? Mamelodi Sundowns draw against Marumo Gallants after Amazulu defeat

Mamelodi Sundowns fans, who were hoping their team would bounce back with a win, were left sorely disappointed when The Brazilians drew with Marumo Gallants, Sports Brief earlier reported.

It was the second time this season that Sundowns dropped points. The first came when Benni McCarthy's Amazulu beat Masandawana 1-0 on Monday night.

Gallants took the lead at the half-hour mark thanks to a penalty. Sundowns lacked that cutting edge and missed a number of good chances before Lesedi Kapinga drew them level with a smart finish in the box.
