FootballMamelodi Sundowns Coach Rhulani Mokwena Denies Outrageous Egypt Claims
- Mamelodi Sundowns gained an impressive point from the recent CAF Champions League trip to North Africa
- The Brazilians drew 2-2 with the Egyptian superclub Al Ahly in the match of the round last Saturday
- Unironically, he was accused afterwards by Egyptian media of time-wasting during the thrilling encounter
Talk about the kettle calling the kettle black.
Sections of Egyptian media have accused Mamelodi Sundowns of time-wasting, a favourite pastime of North African teams.
This was in the wake of the Brazilians' dramatic 2-2 draw with Al Ahly (a time-waster extraordinaire) during a CAF Champions League group encounter in Cairo last Saturday.
According to IOL, an offended Sundowns head coach, Rhulani Mokwena responded to the accusations by saying during the post-match press conference:

“I do not know, I cannot be not sure, but I do not think we wasted time. That is your opinion and I respect your opinion, but no comment. I don’t want to talk about those things. I talk football.”
Sundowns versus Al Ahly is now a bona fide North-vs-South rivalry, with the seeds having been planted during the 2001 competition when the Red Devils overcame Sundowns in the final.
Masandawana, under the tutelage of Pitso Mosimane, then got their revenge in 2016 when they won their first Champions League at the Egyptians' expense.
The rivalry was cemented when Mosimane signed on to coach the Red Devils in 2020, clashing regularly with his former team on and off the pitch.
