The club underlined their ambition by appointing Flemming Berg as their new Sporting Director, Sport24 reported. Berg is a former Chelsea international scout and has been helping develop talent for the Danish national team since 2015.

His work with the Danish FA has contributed in part to the country climbing up the FIFA rankings in recent years. Denmark have jumped up from 46th in the FIFA Rankings to 9th in the five years that he was with the Football Association.

Sundowns released a statement on their website in which Mamelodi Sundowns Chairperson, Tlhopane Motsepe, detailed why they brought Berg to the club.

“There are numerous reasons why we chose to bring Flemming to the Yellow Nation. One of the most important reasons is that he understands that Mamelodi Sundowns has a responsibility to its most important partner – our supporters. He understands that it is our responsibility to play entertaining, inspiring and winning football.
“The Sporting Director also understands that Mamelodi Sundowns is not just a football club, we are a South African footballing institution and that we have a duty to our country, Motsepe said.”

Berg also expressed his excitement at having joined The Brazilians.

“It is a great honor to be here and to be given the possibility to work with this fantastic club. The history and culture are in many ways overwhelming. I am so proud, and I am looking forward to taking the position as Sporting Director for Mamelodi Sundowns,” he said.

What is the role of a Sporting Director?

The Sporting Director serves as a link between the head coach and the club’s chairperson. Sporting Directors are more common in European football. A Sporting Director also has the power to hire and fire the manager.

Another key role of the Sporting Director is that they’re also responsible for the club’s philosophy, beginning with the youth team up to the first team.

Mamelodi Sundowns defeat Sudan's Al Merrikh in the CAF Champions League, scoring 3 goals to top Group A

Mamelodi Sundowns maintained their unbeaten run in the CAF Champions League when they breezed past Al Merrikh 3-0. Masandawana welcome back fans to the stadium for the encounter with the Sudanese side and gave their fans a perfect welcome back gift.

Sundowns went into the game knowing that they had already qualified for the quarter-final stage of the competition but didn’t get complacent because of that, Sports Brief earlier reported.

Sundowns started much the stronger side and Surprise Ralani came close to scoring twice in the opening few minutes for the hosts. Sundowns would eventually take the lead in the 15th minute when George Maluleka headed home. Maluleka has not featured much for the Brazilians but made his chance count.
