Mathaithai FC currently plays in the third tier of South African football, as they competed in the ABC Motsepe League, in the Free State division. Mathaithai FC are third on the table, one place above former DStv Premiership side, Bloemfontein Celtic.

Sundowns made their way into the round of 16 by beating Richards Bay FC, 4-0, while Mathaithai FC beating fellow lower division side, NC Professionals, 2-0.

Sundowns are also looking to bounce back from their defeat to Maritzburg United in the Premier Soccer League over the weekend.

Mamelodi Sundowns can’t overlook Nedbank Cup opponents, Mathaithai FC

Mamelodi Sundowns take on Al Ahly in the CAF Champions League on Saturday and will have one eye on that game already. With key players already out due to injuries, Sundowns can’t afford to suffer any more setbacks before the game against the Egyptian champions, but they also can’t afford to overlook Mathaithai FC.

As reported by Soccer Laduma though, co-coach Rulani Mokwena promised that the Brazilians would select their strongest team possible for the game.

Mokwena has also scouted out the opposition ahead of the game, making note of the players that the Brazilians need to watch out for. He also warned that Mathaithai boasts a fast attack and have players who could pose a problem, Times LIVE reported.

Mamelodi Sundowns' Manqoba Mngithi unhappy with the referee, blames official for Masandawana's second defeat

Mamelodi Sundowns' co-coach, Manqoba Mngqithi, has taken aim at the referee Thando Ndzandzeka after the Brazilians were beaten by Maritzburg United, Sports Brief originally reported.

The team of choice handed Sundowns only their second defeat of the season, as they won thanks to a late penalty. The penalty decision though has got Mngqithi fuming. In the 92nd minute, Amadou Soukouna went down in the box after trying to get past Sundowns’ goalkeeper, Kennedy Mweene.

Ndzandzeka pointed to the spot, believing that Mweene had brought down Soukouna. Replays showed though, that there was no contact and the player appeared to dive. Maritzburg United scored the penalty to claim a 2-1 win but Mngqithi was not happy. Speaking after the game, Mngqithi said that ‘it was the biggest dive he had seen in his life.’
