FootballAngry Liverpool Fans ‘Attack’ Referee After Lyanco’s ‘Foul’ on Diogo Jota Wasn’t Given Before Southampton Goal
- Liverpool have ensured that the winner of this season’s English Premier League title will be decided on the final matchday
- Jurgen Klopp’s side knew they had to defeat Southampton at St Mary’s to ensure Manchester City are not champions yet
- Southampton had opened the scoring in the first half, but fans have blasted the referee for failing to award a free-kick to Liverpool in the build-up to that goal
A number of Liverpool fans have taken to social media to blast referee Martin Atkinson for allowing Southampton’s opener to stand despite the initial 'foul' on Diogo Jota in the build-up to the goal.
Southampton opened the scoring in the 13th minute of the encounter following a sublime effort by Nathan Redmond which was deflected into the far corner.
Liverpool knew anything short of victory in the game at St. Mary’s will jeopardize their chances of winning the title and they were stunned by Southampton’s lead.
Many believe that goal should not have stood after Lyanco went for a 50/50 with Jota and looked to take down his man as well as the ball.
The centre referee allowed play to continue and then Redmond scored against the run of play as VAR did not interrupt, meaning Jurgen Klopp’s men had a herculean task ahead.
Liverpool eventually equalised courtesy of a Takumi Minamino strike not long after, but they knew a draw wasn't the best result and then Joel Matip headed home the winner in the 67th minute.
Fans have reacted to the challenge and they think the standard of officiating was incredibly poor.
One commented as per SPORTbible:
"I thought VAR was brought in to sort these things out ffs."
Another said:
"More incompetence that could cost us, I'm tired."
A third put:
"The worst thing about the blatant Lyanco foul is that VAR actually reviewed it and deemed it to NOT be a clear and obvious error.

Kylian Mbappe on the radar of Liverpool

The Frenchman is set to become a free agent this summer but Real Madrid are leading the race to land the Paris Saint Germain forward.
Klopp insists that a player of Mbappe’s calibre will definitely interest any team but his side don’t have the firepower to bid for him.
