Patrick Mboma has revealed that Liverpool defender Joël Matip is disinterested in playing for the Indomitable Lions of Cameroon.
New Cameroon coach Rigobert Song tried to convince the German-born to join his squad for the games against Algeria, but Matip rejected the request.
According to Mboma, it is unclear if Matip will change his mind in future but for now he does not want to play for Cameroon.
"Rigobert Song went to get Joel Matip and he said he's not coming. Now I don't know if it's a final decision,” he said on Talents d'Afrique on Canal+ as quoted by 13 Football.
Matip last played for Cameroon in September 2015 in a game between the Indomitable Lions and the Gambia. After the match, the Liverpool star, who had a fall out with officials of Cameroon decided to abandoned the national team.
He 37 appearances for Cameroon between 2010 and 2015, and attempts from previous managers has proven futile.
Cameroon release squad to face Algeria without Joël Matip
Earlier, Sports Brief reported that Rigobert Song is preparing rigorously for his first assignment as coach of the Indomitable Lions of Cameroon after naming his squad for the Algeria clash later this month.
The five times African champions named a squad similar to the Nations Cup squad to represent the country in the final round of qualifiers.
AFCON goal king Vincent Abubakar leads a list of 38 man team which will be pruned to 28 before the games on March 25 and March 29, 2022.

Rigobert Song has made the task of convincing Manchester United youngster Anthony Elanga and Youssoufa Moukoko of Dortmund a priority ahead of his first game against Algeria.
Cameroon will face Algeria in a two-legged game later this month for a place in the World Cup in Qatar this year.
However, according to reports, the former Cameroon captain wants to convince four players into his team before the encounter with Algeria.
