  • Referees are not showing blatant or subtle favouritism towards Kaizer Chiefs in the 2022/23 season
  • This is the assessment of respected ex-South African Football Asssociation official Victor Hlungwani
  • Chiefs have been awarded the most penalties this season and have the most red cards in their favour

Kaizer Chiefs have been awarded the most penalties in the Premier Soccer League this season with 10.

This does not mean that referees are showing favouritism to the team or simply being biased against their opponents.

This is the conclusion of former South African Football Association referee, Victor Hlungwani.

Hlungwani is the 'resident' referee on SABC Sport's popular Monday night review programme, Soccer Zone.

He took the time to break down every penalty that was given to the Amakhosi.

This included a controversial one awarded during Chiefs' DStv Premiership encounter against Stellenbosch FC at Soccer City.

Hlungwani said:

"Kaizer Chiefs is in great attacking form. They are inducing errors in defenders and goalkeepers. Once these mistakes are made and lead to errors, the referees have no other options other than to award the penalty."

Ncobo analyses 'pro-Chiefs' decisions

Hlungwani's assessments back those of another legendary former referee, Andile 'Ace' Ncobo, also known as 'Mr Spot On' or 'VAR'.

Sports Brief reported that Ncobo was on SuperSport's Extra Time review show to give his views on the decisions that were awarded in Chiefs' favour in the heated encounter against Stellenbosch FC last Saturday.

This comes in the wake of Stellenbosch coach, Barker sarcastically stating that teams must train with 10 men in preparation for matches against Chiefs in the post-match interview.

The Premier Soccer League, where Ncobo is the general manager, has not indicated whether it will take action against Barker for his comments per the usual procedure.

Ncobo confirms Amakhosi penalty

Sports Brief reported that this is the second time in recent times that Ncobo waded into controversy involving the Amakhosi.

Ncobo previously said a penalty the Chiefs received against Maritzburg United two weekends ago was the correct call.

'VAR' was more disappointed that the referee was not more convincing with his decision when awarding the penalty.
