Soweto Derby: Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates Fans Warned Against Buying Fake Tickets

• The second Soweto Derby of the 2022/23 DStv Premiership season will take place on Saturday
• Nearly 100 000 people are expected to descend on Soccer City in Nasrec south-west of Johannesburg
• This has presented organisers with an age-old problem, that of fake ticket touts

Whoever feels like attending the Soweto Derby on Saturday afternoon will do best to get their match tickets from veritable sources.

Stadium Management South Africa has once again warned spectators to be on the lookout for touts selling fake tickets in what is a roaring trade.

SMSA CEO Bertie Grobler said to Sunday World during a media briefing at Vodaworld in Midrand:

“We are definitely going to have fake tickets. But the most important thing is how we are going to deal with it. We have installed 24 additional cameras around the stadium precinct, to the search point and the access gates. They are inclusive of four LPR [license plate recognition] cameras and the venue operating centre will have about 20 additional TV screens.”

Grobler added that there would be ticket verification sites in and around the venue, with those found to possess fraudulent ones being removed from the stadium. At the time of publication, nearly 40 000 valid tickets had been sold, with around 85 000 having been made available to the public.

Fake ticket syndicate making millions

A syndicate selling fake match tickets is reportedly making a killing from their activities.

Last November at the Carling Black Label Cup held at Soccer City, around 7 500 fake tickets were on sale outside the venue. According to a SowetanLIVE report, Stadium Management South Africa CEO Bertie Grobbelaar and a representative from the publication observed scalpers selling these duplicates on the day.

Some of the spectators who attended the DStv Premiership match between Mamelodi Sundowns and Sekhukhune United last Saturday had their day soured.

They reportedly returned to their vehicles to find they had either been broken into and burglarised, or vandalised by miscreants who were on the prowl outside Loftus Versfeld Stadium in Tshwane.

A video on Twitter near the venue showed these cars in various states of disrepair.
