  • Orlando Casares was appointed as the new Kaizer Chiefs coach in April of 1983 but left at the end of the season
  • Orlando Casares has been described as a fake and arguably the worst coach in the history of the club
  • Kaizer Motaung has since described the appointment of Orlando Casares as a big mistake for the club

It has been 39 years since Kaizer Chiefs made one of the biggest mistakes in club history; appointing Orlando Casares as their new coach.

On 14 April 1983, Kaizer Motaung hired the Argentinian, but he was so bad, that many former players described him as a fake.

Kaizer Motaung also described hiring Casares as a mistake.

“Very flamboyant, nicely dressed and a nice guy,” Motaung said of Casares, Sowetan LIVE reported.
“And you think, 'Hey, there’s something there.' There was nothing there. He was just lucky that there was a team."

Casares was appointed as a coach of Dynamos in November 1982, but left in February the next year for unknown reasons. He returned to the club for a few weeks in March but then left again, MTNFC confirmed.

Surprisingly, he was appointed as Chiefs coach a few months later, despite not having any real coaching experience. His CV was impressive, but many claimed that much of it were figments of his own imagination.

Casares was lucky that he had a good squad to work with and the side won the Datsun Challenge title that year. Sadly they finished third in the league that season, another disappointing outing, and Casares left at the end of the season.

His appointment is still considered a big joke at the club. Former player, Ace Ntsoelengoe’s opinion of Casares was a testament to how terrible he was.

“Casares came to training and we could see straight away that he had never even kicked a soccer ball in his life. Even my granny knew more about football. Casares was a huge joke, and all of the players felt the same way.”

Kaizer Chiefs hit with two new charges by Disciplinary Committee, could face points deduction if found guilty

Kaizer Chiefs' legal troubles are far from over as the Soweto-based club has been slapped with two new charges, Sports Brief earlier reported.

The Amakhosi were charged by the Premier Soccer League’s Disciplinary Committee (DC) for naming two ineligible players in their squad for a fixture against Sekhukhune United during a game last year.

If found guilty by the DC, Chiefs could face a points deduction, Goal.com reported. PSL Prosecutor Zola Majavu confirmed that the side would face charges today. Ironically, the new charges stem from the club’s ongoing dispute with the PSL over the fixtures they could not play last year.
