Inter Milan’s hopes of retaining their Serie A title were dealt a severe blow when they lost 2-1 to Bologna. The title race was turned on its head as stand-in goalkeeper Andrei Radu misjudged a backpass.
Radu was in goal for designated number one and club captain Samir Handanovic. Handanovic was on the bench as head coach Simone Inzaghi chose to give him a rest.
The decision proved costly as Radu failed to control a throw-in from Ivan Perisic in the 81St minute. Bologna forward Nicola Sansone seized the opportunity to turn the ball into an empty net as Radu watched in disbelief.
The defending champions had started brightly after Ivan Perisic exchanged passes with Nicolo Barella to put them ahead in the third minute. Inter then spurned a few chances afterwards through Lautaro Martinez.
Arnautovic scores against former club
Bologna scored with their first attempt on goal after Marko Arnautovic rose highest to turn in a Musa Barrow teasing cross. The former Inter Milan striker now has 13 goals this season.
The Nerazzurri ramped up the pressure as they sought to return to the top of the table. They were undone by Radu, who was making his second Serie A appearance. Inter Milan now remain second with 72 points.
The result puts their City rivals AC Milan in a prime position to win their first Scudetto since 2011. The Rossoneri beat Lazio on Sunday to move to 74 points.
Inzaghi will look back at Radu’s howler and ponder whether that’s where he blew the Serie A title. Inter Milan are looking to make it back to back Scudetto triumphs. Antonio Conte emphatically won the title last year.
