Former Black Stars Defender Warns Against Interference in New Coach Chris Hughton's Job

Former Ghana defender, Dan Quaye has backed the appointment of Chris Hughton as the new coach of the Black Stars.

However, the Hearts of Oak legend is worried over the likely interference in the work of the former Brighton & Hove Albion manager.

Hughton was confirmed as Ghana's national coach on Sunday, having played the role of a technical advisor since March last year.

“We shouldn’t rush the coach because he is now going to build his team. We shouldn’t put him under unnecessary pressure so he can make the right call-up,” Quaye told Bryt FM, as quoted by Pulse.

Quaye explained that while Ghana was blessed with talent, the main problem was interference.

“So if he has been given the job, he should be given the opportunity to work freely without any interference. I don’t have any problem with Hughton’s appointment but if his job is interfered with, he will not succeed. I believe he has what it takes to do well if he is not influenced.”

Quaye played for the Black Stars in the early 2000s and was a member of the team that qualified for the country's first World Cup in Germany.

He spent most of his career in Ghana playing for Hearts of Oak, where he won multiple league titles and the CAF Confederation Cup.

Meanwhile, Hughton is taking up a role as national team coach for the first time, having served most of his time in club football management.

His first game in charge of the Black Stars will be in the Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers against Angola next month.

Sports Brief also reported on John Paintsil suggested the inclusion of Kwesi Appiah to Hughton's technical team.

The Englishman replaced Otto Addo as coach of the Black Stars after the latter's post-2022 World Cup resignation.

Paintsil, believes Hughton needs someone who understands the Ghanaian football culture if he is to succeed.
