  • Frank Lampard returned to Chelsea as caretaker manager until the end of the season
  • The former player and manager replaced Graham Potter who was sacked on Sunday
  • He previously managed the club between 2019 and 2021 before Thomas Tuchel replaced him

Chelsea legend and former manager Frank Lampard returned to the club as caretaker manager until the end of the season, replacing fellow English manager Graham Potter.

Lampard returns to management with his former team since he was sacked at Everton in January, a few days to a year since he took over, with the club languishing in the relegation zone.

Graham Potter replaced Lampard's successor in September, but an end was brought to his tumultuous era after just seven months in charge and left the new boss with an uphill task as the team are 11th on the log.

Athletic UK reports that the club are wary of repeating the Potter mistake, who was hastily appointed to replace Tuchel. Hence, appointing Lampard as a caretaker to allow more time for the expansive search for a new manager.

Terry sends message to Lampard

The club's all-time top scorer with 211 goals, Lampard's return to the club for a second spell did not sit well with many of the fans.

Chelseas's most successful captain John Terry has come out to wish his former teammate the best as he tries to help their beloved club end the season on a high with the UEFA Champions League still up for grabs.

Terry, who rumours linked to a backroom role with Lampard, delivered the message via his Twitter handle. The caretaker boss refused to comment on who else would join him for the short spell.

Lampard joins an exclusive list

Sports Brief reported that Lampard joined an exclusive list of managers to have managed the club more than once with his re-appointment as the caretaker.

Jose Mourinho was the first to manage the club twice. He laid the foundation for success under Roman Abramovich during his first spell between 2004-2007 and returned between 2013-2015.

Famous interim Guus Hiddink managed twice and won the FA Cup in his first spell, while Roberto Di Matteo technically managed twice, winning the UEFA Champions League as interim.
