- Despite the presence of Man City, PSG, and Bayern Munich in the competition, Merson contends the two Carabao Cup finalists have what it takes to win the UCL
- Merson cited the two teams' solid defences as the key that could catapult them to European glory this term
Former Arsenal star Paul Merson believes this season's Champions League trophy is between Liverpool and Chelsea.
The two Premier League heavyweights are among a number of European giants angling for continental glory this term.
Both Chelsea and Liverpool already have one foot in the quarter-finals of the competition, having secured vital wins in the first leg of their respective round of 16 fixtures.
The Reds stunned Inter Milan 2-0 at San Siro in round one of the last 16, with the Blues winning with a similar scoreline against Lille away in France.
Paul Merson's Champions League prediction
Man United and rivals City are also still in the competition with Pep Guardiola’s charges putting five past Sporting Lisbon in their first-leg match played in February.
Paris Saint-Germain, Real Madrid, and Bayern Munich are also some of the top teams still firmly in the competition.
However, Merson contends Liverpool and Chelsea will go all the way in the Champions League this term - thanks to their compact defences.
"I watched the game on Sunday and those two are not going to be a million miles away from winning the Champions League," the former Arsenal star told Sky Sports.
"They have got the best two defences in Europe and if you want to win Champions League football over two legs, you need to keep clean sheets. I think those teams have the ammunition going forward," he added.
