Banyana were dominant against Burundi but lacked the killer instinct. The South Africans could have reached a double-figure score had it not been for wasted chances and a resilient Burundi goalkeeper.

“We’re not completely happy with the performance, but the result is big,” said Ellis after the game.
“We always look for improved performances against Botswana, she added.

She explained that the team were always looking to play better football but also had to grind out results when needed.

How have Botswana fared in the tournament?

The debutants started their campaign off with a bang when they beat Burundi 4-2 in their opening match. They then missed out on a chance to secure automatic qualification to the last eight when they lost to Nigeria in their second game.

Botswana can still secure passage to the quarter-finals with a good result against their Southern African neighbours.

Banyana only managed to score three goals, but the stats painted a very different picture. South Africa had 28 shots, with 16 of those on target and over 450 passes. They also enjoyed 67% possession.

Banyana Banyana are through to the knock-out stages of the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations tournament.

The South African side ran riot against debutants Burundi, winning 3-1, but the scoreline should have been a lot worse.

Banyana ran out easy winners, but Burundi’s keeper, Jeanine Irakoze, earned praise for her performance in front of goal.
