FootballBanyana Banyana Look to Succeed Where Bafana Bafana Failed by Qualifying for 2022 AWCON in Morocco
- South Africa will cross its fingers in anticipation as the women's national football team looking to qualify for a major event
- Banyana Banyana will take on Algeria on Wednesday, looking to confirm qualification for the 2022 Women's African Cup of Nations in Morocco
- There is added motivation to do so, as a very good showing at the tournament will guarantee a spot at the 2023 FIFA Women's World Cup in Australasia
The South African women's national football team has its sights set on Africa Women Cup of Nations and FIFA Women's World Cup qualification.
Banyana Banyana will take on Algeria in Algiers in the second leg of their 2022 Women's AFCON qualifier, holding a crucial 2-0 lead. The match will take place on Wednesday, with the winner qualifying for the tournament to be hosted by Morocco in July.
South Africans had to stew in the disappointment of having to watch the recent 2021 African Cup of Nations in Cameroon without Bafana Bafana to represent them. Banyana, on the other hand, have more than proven themselves as tournament qualifiers throughout their history.
Banyana coach Desiree Ellis said to TimesLIVE:
“The tie is not over, we have to make sure we do not concede. They are going to have to come at us. They are a team with a good fighting spirit. They never give up. When you go away from home it becomes difficult. They are 2-0 down, so they have to be different."
“We have to make sure we don’t concede, because we will always create chances. If they do open the game up the speed of our players will create a lot more openings. If we score then you can almost say the tie is over, but we have to make sure we don’t concede first.”
As reported on BBC Sport, the semifinalists of the AFCON will qualify automatically for the 2023 FIFA Women's World Cup in Australia and New Zealand. Banyana qualified for the global showpiece event for the very first time in 2019 when it was held in France.
