  • Atletico Madrid was too good for great city rivals Real Madrid in a La Liga clash at the Wanda Metropolitano Stadium
  • Yannick Carrasco's 40th-minute penalty was the difference, though the home side had plenty of opportunities to bury the league champions
  • The victory took the Colchoneros of confirming their place in next season's UEFA Champions League

Atletico Madrid defeated Real Madrid 1-0 in a Liga Liga encounter at the Wanda Metropolitano on Sunday night.

Yannick Carrasco converted a 40th-minute penalty after Matheus Cunha was fouled by Jesús Vallejo in the penalty area. The hosts had plenty of opportunities to bury their visitors, but just couldn't find the killer instinct to do so.

This was Colchoneros' first victory over Los Blancos in all competitions since 2016, and also their win against them at their new ground. The win also further cemented Atleti's placing in fourth place as they look to confirm their participation in next season's UEFA Champions League.

Carlo Ancelotti decided to ring the changes following Real's magical comeback against Manchester City in the second leg of their memorable Champions League semifinal second leg. The likes of Mendy David Alaba, Dani Carvajal, Thibaut Courtois, Luka Modric, Karim Benzema, Federico Valverde and Vinicius either sat on the bench or were left in the stands.

This showed as Diego Simeone's men took advantage, placing Real's goals under siege for the entire night. The hosts also got revenge on the visitors after losing to them 2-0 at Santiago Bernabeu last December.

Atleti next plays Elche on Wednesday evening, while Real will host Levante on Thursday night.

Will Atletico Madrid give hated rivals and new La Liga champions Real Madrid a guard of honour?

Great rivals Atletico Madrid and Real Madrid will collide at the Wanda Metropolitano Stadium in the headline clash of this weekend's La Liga action.

As reported by Sports Brief, this fixture will sting for the Colchoneros, as Los Blancos dethroned their hated city rivals to become the champions of Spain for a record-extending 35th time.

It remains to be seen whether the home side will give their visitors a guard of honour because of the context of the teams' history.
