  • Paul Merson has urged Arsenal to make a January move for Manchester United transfer target Cody Gakpo
  • According to Merson, the Gunners risk missing out on a top-four finish if they do not find a cover for Gabriel Jesus, who suffered an injury at the World Cup
  • The Emirates outfit are currently topping the Premier League standings with 37 points, five ahead of second-placed Man City

Arsenal legend Paul Merson has claimed that the Gunners could miss out on a top-four finish in the Premier League this season despite their impressive run.

The north Londoners have been in spectacular shape so far, with the side currently topping the standings with 37 points.

Mikel Arteta's charges have won 12 of their last 14 outings, dropping points only on two occasions.

Arsenal sent warning

However, Merson has warned that his former side could actually miss out on a top-four finish altogether unless they sign Man United target Cody Gakpo in January.

According to the former midfielder, Arsenal need to sign Gakpo as cover for Gabriel Jesus, who is set to miss the better part of the second half of the season with an injury.

"Arsenal have got to go and get Cody Gakpo after Gabriel Jesus’ knee injury," Merson told the Daily Express.
"If he is out for up to three months, as some reports suggest, they will be out of the top four, let alone the Premier League title race," he warned.

Arsenal are scheduled to play West Ham United on Boxing Day when the Premier League season resumes after the World Cup break.

Arsenal stunned in friendly

Earlier, Sports Brief reported Arsenal have been handed a reality check after they were humbled 4-2 in a behind-closed-doors friendly clash against Watford on Saturday afternoon, December 3.

The Gunners had lined up four friendly clashes to play during the Premier League break occasioned by the ongoing World Cup in Qatar.

Their first test of the four was Saturday afternoon when they took on Championship side Watford in a behind-closed-doors friendly.

The match ended in a 4-2 defeat for the north Londoners, with The Hornets staging a second-half comeback to humble Arsenal.
