The Reds were hoping to use the tie to return to winning ways in the Premier League having settled for a 2-2 draw against Tottenham Hotspur in their last outing.

However, Leicester, who saw their League Cup campaign ended by Liverpool earlier last week earned perfect revenge over Jurgen Klopp's charges as they downed them at home.

The visitors had a strong start into the match and should have taken the lead in the 14th minute when they won a penalty after Wilfred Ndidi brought down Mohamed Salah in the area.

However, Salah who stepped up to take the resultant spot-kick blew up the chance as his effort was saved by Schmeichel.

Jordan Henderson went close to breaking the deadlock in the 23rd minute, but Schmeichel was well in place to fend off the danger.

Leicester's first real chance came in the 35th minute following a wonderful one-two that saw Jamie Vardy worm into the penalty box only to watch as his low shot is deflected wide by Joel Matip.

Sadio Mane should have bagged the opener for Liverpool shortly after the break but missed the target from a few yards out.

The Merseysiders were punished shortly after by Lookman who fired home a powerful low shot to hand the hosts the lead.

Efforts by Liverpool to pull a comeback proved futile as the home side held firm to the lead to claim maximum points.

Liverpool's defeat saw their title hopes suffer a blow as they now trail league leaders Man City by six points.

Neville backs Pochettino for Man United role

Earlier, Sports Brief reported Man United icon Gary Neville has backed Paris Saint-Germain boss Mauricio Pochettino for the club's managerial role.

United are yet to find a permanent replacement for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer who was recently dismissed.

Ralf Rangnick is currently in charge at Old Trafford on an interim basis until the end of the season.
