The 33-year old could not hold back his tears as he announced he would be stepping away from the beautiful game in an emotional press conference at the Nou Camp.

Aguero’s decision was prompted by doctor’s orders as he was advised to prioritise his health after complaining of chest pains in October during a La Liga clash against Alaves.

"The decision I have made, I have taken it for my health," said Aguero in the press conference.

A number of Premier League stars and Aguero’s former teammates took to applaud him as a legend of the game in the wake of his disheartening announcement.

Aguero’s football journey

The Argentine started out at Independiente in Argentina, before moving to Atletico Madrid in Spain as a teenager.

At Atletico, he quickly established himself as a potential world-class striker, netting 101 goals in 234 appearances for the Madrid giants.

He was snapped up by Manchester City in 2011 where he properly established himself as one of the greatest finishers in his generation.

TUKO.co.ke takes a look at some of his stats and records which will live long in fan’s memories.

128 opponents

That is the number of opponents Sergio Aguero has scored against in his lucrative career. The opponents include giants such as Manchester United, Liverpool, Chelsea, Real Madrid and Bayern Munich.

The 4th highest scorer in Premier League

Thanks to his exploits for Manchester City for over a decade, Aguero will go down as a great, with 184 goals in 275 Premier Leagye appearances for Manchester City. Only Alan Shearer (260), Wayne Rooney (208) and Andrew Cole (187) have more Premier League goals than him at the time of publication of this article.

Best goal per game ratio

Aguero has found the net every 108 minutes in the Premier League, comfortably making him the best converter in the league’s history.

18 career hat tricks

Aside from an impressive 18 trebles of goals in matches in his career, Aguero has scored 12 hat tricks in the Premier League, which is a record in England’s top flight.

20+ goals

Aguero also established himself as one of the most reliable strikers by managing 20 or more goals in all competitions in 12 of 13 campaigns between 2007/08 and 2019/20. During that time, he managed 30 or more goals on five occasions.

Champions League goals for Man City

For Man City, Aguero managed 36 goals, which is the joint-highest a player has managed for an English side. He ties in the tally with Didier Drogba.

16 years and 332 days

This is a personal stat as there is a 16 years and 332-day gap between Aguero’s first-ever career goal and his final career goal which came for Barcelona against Real Madrid in October 2021

Messi's message to Aguero

Among the people who wished Aguero well in his retirement was his long-time friend Lionel Messi.

Messi took to social media to hail Aguero as he reminisced on the things the pair achieved during their careers which ran almost parallel.

The pair more recently won their first piece of international silverware together – the Copa America.
