FootballPinnick Gives the Only Condition for Eguavoen To Keep Super Eagles Head Coach Work
- Augustine Eguavoen is the current handler of the Super Eagles on interim capacity following the sacking of Gernot Rohr
- NFF president Amaju Pinnick has explained that Augustine Eguavoen could get the job permanently if he wins the AFCON
- At the 2019 edition of the AFCON, Super Eagles of Nigeria finished as third best in the tournament in Egypt
Amaju Pinnick who is the head of the Nigerian Football Federation has stated that current interim gaffer of the Super Eagles Augustine Eguavoen could still be given the chance to lead the team to Cameroon for the AFCON.
The former international was named Super Eagles coach on interim capacity following the sacking of Gernot Rohr who was in charge of the team for five years.
During his tenure as the Super Eagles coach, Gernot Rohr steered the team to the 2018 World Cup in Russia and 2019 African Cup of Nations in Egypt.
How did Super Eagles perform in Russia and Egypt?
At the 2018 World Cup, the Super Eagles failed to qualify from the Group stage losing their last match against Argentina in which a draw would have helped them.
And at the 2019 AFCON, the Super Eagles finished as third best behind Senegal and Algeria who are reigning champions.
According to the report on Soccernet and Complete Sports, Amaju Pinnick disclosed that the NFF chiefs are still working on what is the best for the team.
Amaju Pinnick's statement
“We know that Eguavoen can do the job expertly, but we also know that he will be more useful controlling the technical department. However, if we cannot get the (new) coaches to start work immediately, we will empower them to take the team to Cameroon.
“And if Eguavoen wins the Nations Cup, we might have a rethink. In that case, the foreign coach will now become the technical director, while Eguavoen takes the position of technical adviser.”
