Kylian Mbappe had an instant impact on his return to the French national side as he bagged his first-ever goal at a Euro tournament.

Mbappe scored against Poland from the penalty spot as the Les Bleus finished second in Group D after one win and two draws.

Robert Lewandowski equalised for Poland later on with a penalty of his own to ensure that his side tallied on the standings despite having been already eliminated from the championships.

Apart from the result, the other talking point of the game was a clash between Mbappe and Lewandowski as the two tussled for the ball. The Pole captain swung his arm inadvertently, which caught Mbappe right in the face.

What did Mbappe say to Lewandowski at Euro 2024?

For context, this was the first game Mbappe was playing after breaking his nose during their opening game against Austria.

He didn't feature against the Netherlands despite Didier Deschamps naming him on the bench. He returned against Poland, spotting a face mask. He is expected to undergo surgery once the tournament is over.

The new Real Madrid forward did not take the challenge too kindly, with Foot Mercato convinced he insulted his soon-to-be El Clasico rival. Lewandowski wasn't penalised for the incident.

The 2018 World Champions will now wait for the runners-up in Group E to know who they will face in the Round of 16. Group E is still finely poised, with all four teams on three points heading into the final games.

Euro 2024 Round of 16 draw explained

Sports Brief has also reported on why France has been grouped on the same side as Germany, Spain and Portugal in the knockout stage.

France finishing as runners-up in their group meant that only one of the aforementioned big teams can reach the July 14 final in Berlin.

The other three finished as group winners and are expected to be drawn with 'modest' opposition in the next round.
