Dutch striker Wout Weghorst shared how he predicted his match-winning performance to his girlfriend before scoring against Poland on Sunday, June 16.

The former Manchester United forward, who made a name for himself at the 2022 World Cup, once again rose to the occasion in Hamburg, helping the Netherlands start their Euro 2024 campaign with a victory.

Although Ronald Koeman's men secured all three points, it was Poland that struck first when Adam Buksa, filling in for the injured Robert Lewandowski, headed his side into the lead after 16 minutes.

Liverpool attacker Cody Gakpo then equalised for the 1988 champions with a deflected shot at the Volksparkstadion, per the BBC.

As the game seemed destined for a draw, Koeman brought on Weghorst in the 81st minute in search of a late winner.

True to Weghorst's prediction, the 31-year-old substitute latched onto a pass from Nathan Ake to score the decisive goal just two minutes after entering the game.

Weghorst predicts match-winning heroics to girlfriend

After the match, the Burnley hitman revealed he had foreseen his goal and had told his girlfriend beforehand that he would be the hero.

"I knew this was going to happen. I can show you the Whatsapp texts," the elated striker told reporters, as quoted by The Europeanlad.
Shedding more light on his premonition, Weghorst added: "This morning I texted my girlfriend: 'It will be 0-0 or 1-1 about 20 minutes before FT whistle, and then..' My goal came a bit later, but still."

Group D preview: Netherlands to challenge France

Group D promises to be captivating, featuring former champions France and the Netherlands, along with Poland and Austria.

Sports Brief provides an analysis of these four teams as Euro 2024 kicks off.

Les Bleus are strong favorites to lead the group, but after their victory over Poland on match day one, the Dutch will be confident in their ability to challenge the two-time winners.
